Xenoestrogens and Estrogen?

Estrogen disruption and Xenoestrogens:

Estrogen is a very important and critical hormone for women’s health, however, it can also be a misinterpreted as a “curse.”  Even though the affects are seen in both females and males. In my clinic I see firsthand, unfortunately, telling evidence of how estrogen can effect woman of all ages.

Let’s look at the benefits of estrogen for women:

  • Female sex characteristics
  • Healthy reproductive system
  • Musculoskeletal health
  • Cardiovascular health
  • Age wellness including skin, hair, nails health
  • Libido
  • Restful sleep
  • Memory focus concentration

As women age estrogen levels drop, and as women approach menopause estrogen levels plummet.

Progesterone the “other “ critical female hormone will also drop, the result is menopause. With menopause, women can experience a decline in all of the above mentioned benefits of estrogen, as well as an increase in other unpleasant symptoms such as irritability, restlessness, anxiety, depression and hot flushes.

A well know option for many women is ERT (estrogen replacement therapy) through which many of the signs and symptoms of menopause can be controlled. However, at what cost?! There can be significant risks with ERT such as blood clots and the greatest concern for women is cancer.

Interestingly enough if we go back in time, at least a few generations ago, women transitioned into menopause yet many of the concerns we discussed earlier did not occur in these women.

What could be the answer?  One possible factor is the environment and diet. We now know that many food additives and chemicals can affect hormonal health, and estrogen metabolism is no exception. These types of chemicals are often referred to as xenoestrogens. Why is this important?

Women can suffer from menopause symptoms, while having high levels of these xenoestrogen disruptors. Many of these disruptors were not in the diet or environment of women a few generations ago.

Women would transition through menopause predictably and smoothly. Could it be possible that many menopausal signs and symptoms are not the result of a drop in normal estrogen but a rise in xenoestrogens?

This is why women should consider reducing their exposure to xenoestrogens rather than resort to taking ERT. Awareness is the key - here is a list of xenoestrogens:

Skincare:

  • 4-Methylbenzylidene camphor (4-MBC) and Benzophenone (sunscreen lotions)
  • Parabens(methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben and butylparaben commonly used as a preservative)

Industrial products and Plastics:

  • Bisphenol A (monomer for polycarbonate plastic and epoxy resin; antioxidant in plasticizers)
  • Phthalates (plasticizers)
  • DEHP(plasticizer for PVC)
  • Polybrominated biphenyl ethers (PBDEs) (flame retardants used in plastics, foams, building materials, electronics, furnishings, motor vehicles).
  • Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs)

 

Food:

  • Erythrosine / FD&C Red No. 3
  • Phenosulfothiazine(a red dye)
  • Butylated hydroxyanisole / BHA(food preservative)

 

Building supplies:

  • Pentachlorophenol (general biocide and wood preservative)
  • Polychlorinated biphenyls / PCBs(in electrical oils, lubricants, adhesives, paints)

Note:This is just a short list that does not end here. There are also other xenoestrogens found in agricultural pesticides and insecticides.

Don’t be a willing victim and prevent hormone disruption in your life. I have had remarkable results treating hormone related disease through simple lifestyle changes and the addition of special nutraceuticals to support the removal of these nasty chemicals from your body. Remember educate, evaluate, and empower yourself!

In my book The Doctor Of The Future Is Here, I describe all the tools I have created to help Doctors educate their patients.

These were designed to help patients make a connection with some of the influences and market forces that affect our daily lives and our health.

For example, I was looking for a way to describe how our culture and the health care system of today evolved out of the Industrial Revolution. I created the 3 Ps, which is my shorthand for profits, products, and people.

The important thing here is that my concept of the 3 Ps became a way for me to understand corporate decision-making, and to see that in real life there are no fairy-tale kings, dragons, or villagers.

The 3 Ps simply represent a way of doing business. It's not all good and it's not all bad. Like most things in life, it's both, and each of us has to learn to understand it well enough to make it work for us in our own lives.

Whenever I'm tempted to blame corporations for the health issues I see in my patients every day, the 3 Ps remind me that corporations are not to blame. They're doing what they're supposed to do, which is make a profit. That's what they're accountable to their shareholders for doing. They're not responsible for our health. WE ARE! Each of us, as individuals. It's our job to recognize the risk factors for illness and work proactively to prevent it, not wait until we're sick and then take reactive measures.

As most of us have noticed over these last few decades modern science and technology have been advancing exponentially. Even in my short time here we have come from getting up off the sofa to turn a knob in order to change the channels on the TV. To lying on the sofa using a smart phone to operate and surf all 500 hundred channels! I believe in many ways people just take it for granted that new science is automatically the best science!

There is no doubt about the numerous benefits of newly discovered science and technology, however, we need to respect and understand the past and the science behind what we once thought of as just a simple life style and simple health practices! Practices our parents, grandparents and great grandparents used even though they didn't fully understand the science behind the benefits. They just knew these practices were beneficial, they just did not know the how and why. But now we know that our intuition was correct all along, and we have the science to prove it!

At that time experience and observation, empirical evidence, was the key factor in these older practices. Many of which were passed down from generation to generation with absolute conviction and trust. Remember these practices would have been stopped if their safety and effectiveness were in doubt. It was clearly defined over the years with no bias.

Unfortunately, as the generations passed these pearls of wisdom were forgotten, discredited and eventually lost. These pearls of wisdom are what refer to as lost wisdom!
