Can the flu be hacked?

Again Happy New Everyone!

I just want to start today by pointing out that a few people have wondered why they weren't receiving their weekly newsletter. It turns out that it was going into their SPAM file!  So please click allow when you see our newsletter so you know you are getting it!, thankyou!

It's been a little colder than normal this year, and with these quickly changing temperatures you can get caught with a cold and/or flu! As some of you can attest, it can happen out of nowhere, or maybe you have a child that is experiencing  stubborn symptoms that are taking longer than normal to resolve and are taking a toll on both of you! Many of my patients ask what can they do to protect themselves and their family from colds and flus?

As we all know, the pressure in the media and from traditional medicine encourages individuals to wash their hands of personal responsibility, and take the flu shot! The controversy regarding the flu shot is often what brings patients to my clinic this time of year. As we have noticed there have been years where the effectiveness of the flu shot was in doubt and not without certain risks, and some patients are frustrated when they feel they are protected - when they actually are not! So what can we do?

I teach our patients some simple rules to keep from contracting the flu and other seasonal related illness.

To start, I teach all my patients the very real benefits of adequate Vitamin D levels. Low levels of Vitamin D have been shown to weaken the immune system. So I recommend everyone have their Vitamin D levels checked, then supplement accordingly, you will notice a significant difference!

At my clinic we teach the importance of probiotics and immune health. There are specific strains of probiotics that we promote to support immune health. As we now know 70% of our immune system response is from the gut, yes that is what I said, the GUT! Since it is becoming well understood that a diet high in refined sugar weakens our immune system - I endorse and promote a diet low or without refined sugar. The majority of your diet should be high in root vegetables, greens and lean protein (Including protein supplements) this will keep your immune system and body running smooth!

As I mentioned last week investing in full spectrum lighting for in-door use especially during the winter months will stimulate the pineal gland keeping your mood stable and stress low. As we know mild depression and anxiety can also weaken the immune system.

Some very effective herbal supplements we often employ to combat seasonal affects are: Ashwagandha an Ayurvedic botanical touted for its immune building properties. Ginseng is an Asian botanical also known to improve immune function. Additionally, the mushroom known as Cordyceps which is a traditional Chinese botanical can also be used to stimulate immune function.

At the first sign of a sore throat I encourage patients to dissolve a zinc lozenge in the mouth. Zinc is a simple mineral which is well known for its antiviral properties. This can help you curtail and event fight off a potential virus.

Another non-invasive and effective flu remedy is known as a homeopathic immune booster. Homeopathic medicine can boost natural immune defence much like a flu shot, however, without introducing any viral proteins, additives or preservatives into the body! The beauty of taking control of your immune health is that you can protect yourself against most types of seasonal BUGs including the proverbial flu!

Let’s remember the importance of good quality sleep. As the change of seasons starts to take effect good sleep behavior can boost immune function.

Let me ask you this, am I starting to sound like a broken record yet with what some might say are very simple things you can do to fight off seasonal flus and recurring colds?

It is because I know firsthand there are many patients who just never seem to get sick regardless of what time of year it is just by following my simple recommendations.

This is why I say you can learn how to take back control of your health and keep you and your family healthy all year long. Just think about the number of days people miss work and kids are unable to attend school can all be reduced just by following my simple recommendations. Best of all  - with no risks, no gambling and no precautions! Time to Educate, evaluate and empower yourself!

As most of us have noticed over these last few decades modern science and technology have been advancing exponentially. Even in my short time here we have come from getting up off the sofa to turn a knob in order to change the channels on the TV. To lying on the sofa using a smart phone to operate and surf all 500 hundred channels! I believe in many ways people just take it for granted that new science is automatically the best science!

There is no doubt about the numerous benefits of newly discovered science and technology, however, we need to respect and understand the past and the science behind what we once thought of as just a simple life style and simple health practices! Practices our parents, grandparents and great grandparents used even though they didn't fully understand the science behind the benefits. They just knew these practices were beneficial, they just did not know the how and why. But now we know that our intuition was correct all along, and we have the science to prove it!

At that time experience and observation, empirical evidence, was the key factor in these older practices. Many of which were passed down from generation to generation with absolute conviction and trust. Remember these practices would have been stopped if their safety and effectiveness were in doubt. It was clearly defined over the years with no bias.

Unfortunately, as the generations passed these pearls of wisdom were forgotten, discredited and eventually lost. These pearls of wisdom are what refer to as lost wisdom!
