Dry lips and tips!

Tips on dry lips!

At this time of year dry lips are a nasty problem that people of all ages can suffer from. Dry lips can be described as parched or dry, and sometimes can even crack and bleed!

Can dehydration cause dry lips? Yes, it is one of the better known causes. So remember to drink water throughout the day. I recommend sipping small amounts of water throughout the day. This can rehydrate a body almost as well as IV hydration. Drinking large amounts of water quickly will only result in frequent urination and not proper hydration. Avoid a high sodium diet, caffeine and alcohol consumption as these can leave you dehydrated!

Be aware of the majority of topical lip products and some moisturizers as they can irritate your lips and cause dryness. Some can actually dehydrate your lips! Avoid licking your lips when possible as this can cause dryness as well.

What about nutrition? I like to recommend an increase in vitamins D, vitamin C, B complex including B1 B2 and B6 and methyltetrahydrafolate.  It has been suggested that optimal levels of these vitamins can reduce reoccurring dry cracked lips especially at the corners of the mouth.

Is it a fungus or virus? Now let’s go beyond what many people encounter concerning dry lips. Everyone should be aware that fungal and/or viral infections such as cold sores can lead to cracked lips. In these cases I will recommend our patients eat foods high in omega oils such as fish oils, flax seed oils, and even eggs. These foods help to improve moisture to the skin. You may need to discuss more severe symptoms with your health care professional as theses causes may require more aggressive therapy!

What about Stress? One lesser known cause of dry lips is the impact of stress on dry lips. High stress can lead to symptoms of anxiety, and we now know dry mouth, tongue, and lips are all signs of anxiety. If you feel stress then check your cortisol levels as this can identify and provide an answer to your dry lips.

Remember educate, evaluate, and empower yourself!

About The Lost Wisdom Newsletter

As most of us have noticed over these last few decades modern science and technology have been advancing exponentially. Even in my short time here we have come from getting up off the sofa to turn a knob in order to change the channels on the TV. To lying on the sofa using a smart phone to operate and surf all 500 hundred channels! I believe in many ways people just take it for granted that new science is automatically the best science!

There is no doubt about the numerous benefits of newly discovered science and technology, however, we need to respect and understand the past and the science behind what we once thought of as just a simple life style and simple health practices! Practices our parents, grandparents and great grandparents used even though they didn't fully understand the science behind the benefits. They just knew these practices were beneficial, they just did not know the how and why. But now we know that our intuition was correct all along, and we have the science to prove it!

At that time experience and observation, empirical evidence, was the key factor in these older practices. Many of which were passed down from generation to generation with absolute conviction and trust. Remember these practices would have been stopped if their safety and effectiveness were in doubt. It was clearly defined over the years with no bias.

Unfortunately, as the generations passed these pearls of wisdom were forgotten, discredited and eventually lost. These pearls of wisdom are what refer to as lost wisdom!

Learn more about true preventative healthcare here each week, as I plan to get into other examples where it can be applied, as well as other relevant topics.
